Pricelessware mid-year vote(OT)

S

stan

first of all I think susan your doing a good job, I look forward to
the results of what people here think the best freeware is, but I
would like these votes also conducted mid year, twice a year,

personally I dont visit pricelessware after 3 months of the vote because
I know its outdated, with new freeware being release almost weekly
priclessware does not reflect the every changing freeware available,

I would like pricelessware to conduct 2 votes a year,

another possible senerio is, if the freeware "experts" are not available
for this one week period of the year when the votes are held,
priclessware could be stuck with crappy programs for one whole year.

just a suggestion, what do you think?

On paper not a bad idea, but doesn't Susan have enough of a huge
and hellish job organising it once a year?

Hey, I was assuming that Stan was volunteering his services!

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh ;)

In regard to the vote - someone asked recently about extending the
voting period. I suggested an *absentee* ballot - haven't seen any
comments on this.

If someone is going to be out of town that week they could send a ballot
to the Pricelessware link. I would forward those votes to the newsgroup
when the voting starts.

Comments?

We generally do that. The late spring vote is not as extensive as
the main yearly vote. It is to add programs which have appeared or
have significantly improved since the main yearly vote. Programs
which need removing can also be removed at that time.

Why not do a form on the priclessware.org website ? That way those who
still have access to the web but not mail or usenet can still vote ?

It was discussed when Genna posted the PL2004 schedule - there's a
thread around here someplace . . .

summary:

No one knew of any suitable software.

People wanted the vote in the newsgroup - not on the web site.

other than that . . . ;)

You know what? It is supposed to be twice a year. It's also a lot of work.
And this year just fell through the cracks because I just haven't been able
to be around as much as I would like to have been. My apologies to all.

Just for the record though, the mid-year updates were always exactly that...
updates. Meaning that we kept track of suggestions people made and then just
proposed them to acf as a list. Any removals or reevaluations were also
addressed then, but it was never the objective of the mid-year review to be
a full-blown election.

this may be a stupid question but,
do you really need nominations
followed by discussions?

why cant people just vote their favorite freeware software.
then they can have a discussion period,
and remove what not appropriate?
then the votes are counted
then the results printed

kiss..

That would be nomination.

Duh.

Just a question on a side track:

how is the pricelessware.org site organized? Visiting it, I only see
..htm files. Are these all manually updated, or are you using a
database of some kind? I hope for the latter.

Now, a voting form would definitely be not a serious problem if
you've got a DB-based website, throw in some PHP and the form is
ready. I wouldn't know why you would need extra software to do such a
thing...

Well, it was just a thought :)

Hello Wald,

Yes, the *how* to do it became irrelevant once it was clear that people
wanted the vote in the newsgroup rather than on the web site.

re: your questions about the site. The pages are manually updated. Most
of the pages are HTML - there is a little PHP (the Alphabetical list
page and the PL2004 Nominations page) - the PHP script is courtesy of
Lars. *Learning* PHP is on my (endlessly long) to-do list. :)

20 Yes, but keep reading.

30 Hold that thought.

40 Discussions, okay...

50 That's called nomination, first time around. So far the "stupid"
prediction is faring quite well.

60 Discussions, okay...

70 We do that.

80 We do that.

90 We do that.

100 Yep -- "stupid" still works.

LOL, some of you really need a life outside this group,

anyway,

Take 2

well, I was just wondering why so much work for a simple vote,
on "what the best freeware is", perhaps it could be made easier?
perhaps it cant?, the main question was, are nominations really needed?

perhaps people could just list their freeware choices,
then a discussion, anything that does not comply removed,
then peoples choices counted,

only Pricelessware website work would be the results printed,
and freeware put into categories?

I'm not an expert on these things, just wanted to see more Polls
conducted, perhaps it could be made easier for susan and the volunteers.

So what do you know about it?

well im asking questions about the process, I said im no expert,
your just a trolling, any troll can call this place home
by simply posting freeware like yourself..lol

you could of answered my question, but you didnt did you..

Ah. I thought you were brand new.

What delayed the results? A volunteer like Genna or Susan had a life,
perhaps -- like you recommend?

but YOU deliberately missed the point of my posts,
because you are only interested in trolling correct!

lets be honest now, I also want to see if your a liar,

remember blinky the shark! yes or no?

LoL Regards
