preview pane revisited

See my previous post about preview pane. The reason why docs from office 2003
cannot be previewed is they need a plugin. I have tried a wordpad file (rtf)
and this previews ok. I have now saved a word 2003 file as a rtf and that
previews ok so I assume its using the plugin supplied by wordpad. Thats the
answer register the office doc to be previewed by wordpad or notepad. That
would be good enough for me and yes I know that some formatting would be lost
but the preview would be readable. Can someone tell me were in the registry
the ascociations of file extensions and preview plugins are located so I can
ascociate a word 2003 doc with either wordpad or a notepad preview plugin.
thanks for any help.

thanks but no that will not do it. that just ascociates the file extension ie
..doc with the program that opens it when double clicked ie word. the preview
handlers in explorer are a different thing but thanks for replying

I have had another idea. If I install the trial version of office 2007 which
should provide the handlers and then uninstall it will the handlers still
remain. i suspect they would but if someon at microsoft tells me different it
could save me some time. Thanks

That is an interesting idea. You might even be able to install the trial
version of Office 2007 and then just leave it installed and not use it after
the trial period expires. Although it would be disabled, it would likely
leave all of the registry and handler settings intact.

Please let us know how this works out.
