Preview pane keep turning on as default

I am using outlook 2002, SP-2. I set the preview pane off as the start-up
default. It worked well for many years, but in the last two weeks, outlook
keep starting up itself with the preview pane on, which I do not like. I
have not change any setting. Even though I turn the preview pane off, it
would start in the on-mode as the default. What can i do to fix the
problem?

Use the command line switch to set it as off:

start->run->outlook.exe /nopreview
