do you have many custom views? if not... at start menu, run, type
outlook.exe /cleanviews
This will erase all custom views and better insure step 2 works.
Find define views in the Views menu - it's under arrange by or current view,
depending on your version. Modify the Message view and disable the preview
pane - it's under other settings.
