Preventing wireless access to some access points

How can I prevent Windows XP from trying to connect to
certain access points?

In some areas of my house, the neighbor's access point has
stronger signal than the AP that I want to connect to. I
want to eliminate this AP from the list so the connection
is not made.

1. make sure you are broadcasting your SSID
2. make sure you change the name of your SSID to something unique and
diffrerent from your neighbors
3. in advanced, unmark automatically connect to non preferred networks
(and remove your neighbors SSID from the list of preferred networks if
it is already there)

I already had a unique SSID being broadcast.

The neighbor's SSID has been removed from the list of
preferred networks, but I don't see any option to choose
automatic connections or not.

After several reconfiguration attempts and reboots, I
finally got to the point where I can connect to my AP
rather than the neighbor's. However, I'm now back at a
state that I was at months ago, where the wireless
connection would just get dropped. This happens every few
minutes. I make the connection, then a few minutes later
the connection is unavailable, then I have to make the
connection again.

My network card is a Lucent Orinoco, and the AP is a
Linksys.

Check the Authentication options in your wireless network adapter's settings
and make sure that you don't have 802.1x authentication enabled. You'll
find this by right-clicking your wireless adapter in the Network Connections
box, selecting Properties, then the Authentication tab.
