Preventing DHCP or authorizing ***STRANGE***

F

Frank Acree

I run a small library network with abour 75 total nodes. I
use DHCP to offer up IP addresses to all workstations.
Everything works great, too well in fact. I need a way to
prevent users from unplugging lab workstations and
plugging in thier own laptops to access our network and or
the internet. I would like to do this internaly with DHCP,
DNS, WINS or the like. Note that turn over of PC s is such
that I enjoy using DHCP to push IP , DNS and other
information. The other option (to use port security on the
router) would be very stressful ( read: I would have to
let someone else control it).

What I would like:
assign IP only after user is authorized by SAM
assign of new mac address with IP only after authorized by
me
assign IP only to windows 2000 or XP OS

Any help appreceiated...

DHCP does not provide any type of built in security so your best bet is to
create DHCP reservations for the "authorized" cleints and exclude any
unreserved address in your scope.
