Prevent Styles

I would like to be able to format text without any styles being applied
automatically. For example, each time I bold text and increase the font
size, the normal style is changed to one of the header styles. Is there a
way to maintain the normal style in a case like this?

What version of Word are you using?

There are several settings that can affect this. In Word 2007, for starters,
I would check Office button - Word Options - Proofing tab - AutoCorrect
Options - AutoFormat As You Type tab, and remove checks next to the "Apply
as you type" options and "Define styles based on your formatting".

In Word 2003, try Tools - AutoCorrect Options... etc.
