Pre-fetching is a new feature of Windows XP that helps the user by loading
into RAM certain portions of applications that the utility determines are
most frequently used.
When a Windows XP system is booted, data is saved about all logical disk
read operations. On later boots, this information is used to prefetch these
files in parallel with other boot operations.
Prefetching is managed by the operating system, i.e., it is not user
controlled. From time to time the prefetch database can become out-of-date,
so you can sometimes improve performance by clearing the contents of the
folder and allowing Windows XP to rebuild it.
