Prefetch gone?

I installed SP2 and the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder is gone. Is there some
registry setting or something I can do to restore the Prefetch
functionality?

My desktop machine still has it working (also SP2), but on the laptop it
disappeared.

I just noticed mine is also gone. Perhaps SP2 has removed the
requirement for the prefetch folder? Anybody know?

This is just a speculation:

1. Recreate the PREFETCH folder under WINDOWS folder.

2. Create an new empty text file in the PREFETCH folder and open it using
Notepad.

3. Enter the text below and save the file.
[OptimalLayoutFile]
Version=1

4. Rename the text file to "LAYOUT.INI" (no quotes).

5. Reboot your system.

6. Run some Windows files (eg. Notepad, Wordpad, Explorer, etc.) and close
them.

7. Reopen the previous LAYOUT.INI file using Notepad.

If the LAYOUT.INI file has not been changed, then this method is not
successful.
Otherwise, it's working again.
Let me know the result.

I think I figured it out. The Task Scheduler (under Administrative
Tools/Services) was disabled on the laptop but not on the desktop. I
changed that task to 'Automatic' and started it running and the Prefetch
folder started working again. First, I did create the Prefetch folder and
Layout.ini as the other poster suggested.

Thanks. I'll take a look at services and see if mine is also
disabled. Just checked, and my Task Scheduler is set for automatic.
I believe Alex Nichol stated that the prefetch folder would start
working on it's own after the installation of SP2. I think I'll
create the folder as recommended and see what happens.
