Prefetch No Longer Functioning

WXP Pro SP2 Following the entry of a Trojan Horse with an Ad to buy "Pest
Trap" a cpl days ago, within mins I ran NAV Sys Scan, Ad-Aware Pro, JV
Registry Clnr, deleted the "contents" of Prefetch including the layout.inf,?
TIF, Temp History and Cookies. The invasion knocked out my Desktop
Background pix but that has now been remedied.
These folders have resumed operating properly except ... my Prefetch folder
has remained TOTALLY empty.

When in normal mode would "Prefetch" show up in TaskMgr?
Both Event Viewer\Application and System appear normal.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get Prefetch functioning and
what are the consequences I'm not detecting when it isn't?
Thx for your time and any suggestions you care to submit. ...

since you really just finding out what all
damage was done to your system by
that virus, it might be a good idea to
simply do a windows system repair
with you windows cd....

also, there may be a chance the virus
found a hiding place inside a system restore point.
so a windows repair will also delete all the
restore files as an added bonus....

Hi William, I used your Background Registry fix as this Trojan Horse
solidified the Menu. Worked great! I'm so thankful to u for posting the
fix.

Cpl things I've found since the "Hit" The Monitor above the Background
choices doesn't hold the pix or the 'stretch' feature. It reverts to Black.
It works perfectly on my Monitor and that's my only concern.
Most aggravating and posted on this Board, is I now have coloured patches
under my desktop icons vs translucency. All the great suggestions haven't
made the patches disappear.
As to this Prefetch problem and your suggestion to check the Registry
setting for Prefetch. I found it was on 3.
Thought I'd try something: I changed it to 0, Shut Down, etc., Worked for
an hour, checked Prefetch - no entries as per 0 setting.
Changed the Registry setting back to 3, Shut down, Worked for an hr,
Prefetch folder still empty.
No basis for this, thought making a change might help. It didn't.

I haven't noticed anything, so far, in the way my programs are functioning
without Prefetch. Do some users actually chose to run without Prefetch
operating?
CPU P4 3.6 with 2 GB Ram. Should I be concerned and continue to look for a
solution to get Prefetch working? Thx for helping.

Ben, Sounds like something I might try if only I had a clue as to what to do
after I put the WXP Pro CD in the Drive. DUH!!
Would u pls direct me to an area bearing instructions or if u have the
instructions typed out u can post or care to guide me through it ... I'd sure
appreciate your efforts. That's too much to ask but maybe u have an URL to
a Site? Thx VM for taking the time to make this suggestion. ...

Hi Edna,

I should have mentioned that prefetch will take at least 3 reboots to
rebuild itself. Please use the computer as you would, then in a few days
take a look at the Prefetch folder contents.

About the desktop background picture in Display Properties background page
(in the monitor) always black. I have no idea why this would be happening.

About desktop icon text, please try these methods.

Method 1

Control Panel (Classic View) > System Properties > Advance tab > Performance
settings button > Ensure you have "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the
desktop" checked.

Method 2

Control Panel (Classic View) > Display Properties > Desktop tab > Customize
Desktop button > Web tab > Delete any Web pages if any are listed. Also
uncheck "Lock Desktop Items".

Method 3

If "Lock Desktop Items" is unchecked then place a checkmark in the box,
select OK and click the Apply button. Then go back and uncheck "Lock Desktop
Items".

[big snip]
That link has incorrect info.
There are only 4 valid values for "EnablePrefetcher"

0 = Disabled
1 = Application launch prefetching enabled
2 = Boot prefetching enabled
3 = Applaunch & Boot enabled

anything greater that '3' will be ignored.

Only thing it does is to speed up accessing to programs that are used a lot
but with CPU you probable have now I doubt if you would see any difference.
I empty mine about once a month.

William, Just a note to tell u the little Monitor, as of this morning. is now
displaying and retaining my Desktop Background. Didn't want u to lose any
more sleep over this.
re Icon Patches: I had already tried these steps but they hadn't worked.
What did work: I deleted two toolbars I had created prior to the "Hit".
They were acting a little strange. As soon as I deleted them, instantly, my
Icons lost the patches. Thx for posting these suggestions.

Prefetch ... still not working. I'm working on it. ...

The same thing recently happened to my father's computer and his background
is knocked out and the display/background options are locked up. How did you
get the background back?

Thanks in advance.
