Preferences in Mail

Hi, there. I am a new Mail user and can't seem to find how I modify my
preferences, like being able to hit "escape" to close emails and opening
previous email instead of next email after deleting an email. I'll bet some
smart person out there knows how to make these changes.

Well, the first seems to work if you haven't entered anything yet.
The second is not possible.
