is the error notice I get when attempting to run the program, I go to
Microsoft update and the new version cant be found. I went into windows
downloads and I attempted to install the new terminal services and a new
version of remote desktop connection (mstsc) and it says I have the latest
version.

what gives? how to I fix this?

I leased a new VPS win2003 service and I want to connect and configure my
server

- What is the exact command you use?
- What version of mstsc.exe do you use? Mine is 6.0.6001.18000.

hi, thanks for replying, I just use the "start/all
programs/accessories/remote desktop connection"
link and I get the following message:

"the pre-release version of remote desktop connection has expired, to
download the full version of remote desktop
connection, go to windows update or contact your system administrator."

right-click properties says I have I 6.0.6001.16659.

manually downloading the latest version is easy (Windows XP Remote Desktop
Connection software
[XPSP2 5.1.2600.2180]MSRDPCLI.EXE), however it wont install. I get the
following error:

"remote desktop connection cannot be installed because your operating system
already has a built-in version.
see all programs\ accessories\ remote desktop connection on your start menu"

You can obtain mstsc.exe from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0c-0d18-4306-abcf-d4f18c8f5df9&DisplayLang=en

If this does not work then you can try the version I found on my machine.
For a limited time you can download it from here:
http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/2327575_sdqwd/mstsc.exe. You should do
this:
- Download it to c:\mstsc.exe.
- Click Start / Run / cmd{OK}
- Type this command:
c:\mstsc.exe /v:YourRDPServername{Enter}
Report the result in your reply.

when I download the Microsoft file and install it I get this error:
"KB925876 setup error
setup has determined that the service pack version of this system is newer
than the update you are applying.
there is no need to install this update."

when I try the cmd line or gui execution of your version of the file I get
the following error :
"the system cannot find the file specified
c:\\<lang_name>\mstsc.exe.mui"

it seems to me that I might have to manually uninstall and de-register
remote desktop connection before I can install anything again for it.
what do I need to do?

We've seen the pre-release error on a machine that came in. Research
showed that a pre-release of SP3 was installed on the machine. We
tried to uninstall but couldn't find it in add/remove. We tried to
install a new copy of SP3 but it errored something like newer version
of windows exists. We ended up disabling Windows File Protection for
mstsc.exe and copying the exe from a working machine. We told the
owner that xp should be reinstalled.

And what happens with the file I uploaded for you?

I slip streamed sp3 into a new cd of win-xp-pro for this latest install, and
then activated using my OEM license on it. I'd hate to do a re-install.

I confess my ignorance here: I don't know what .mui files are. Anyway, you
can find mine here:
http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/2347516_mpn7l/mstsc.exe.mui. It normally
resides in c:\windows\system32\en-us.

I'm sorry I took so long to reply to the group. alas nothing has worked to
resolve my problem. it's a pain to have been working on my desktop, then to
get the laptop out to administer my online server, as the laptop has the
only working remote desktop software working.

unfortunately all other 3rd party remote desktop vendors use the MS
libraries which now does not work.

I might have to try vpn or vnc connections.
