pre home networking/ xp license question

My computer is in the shop in a coma(pray for me :).

Any way, my questions are: 1) My kids and I need to be
using the same operating system for wireless networking
right?

2)I have windows XP Pro on my computer, and my son
downloaded it onto his laptop. Now he is getting
expiration messages re: Windows. Can I just pay a license
fee?

3) My daughter's beater computer has Win 98, I think...Do
I need to purch another win XP pro or license.

Sorry to bother you folks with this, but as I said,

4) my computer is in the shop, and who knows what my son
did with the Win XP disk-- I have not given up looking,
but that is another potential crimp in the plan

Thanks!!

No, you do not need the same operating system installed
in order to use wireless networking.

Assuming you have a "Retail Version" of Windows XP:

The simple and easy solution is to purchase additional Product Keys,
change to the new Product Key, then activate.

HOW TO: Change the Product Key at the Time of Activation

Additional Licenses for Windows XP Home Edition
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.asp

Additional Licenses for Windows XP Professional
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp

On the back of the Windows XP box, please read the statement
"For installation and use on one computer"
(see License Agreement for license terms).

To access the License Agreement on your XP computer, go to:

Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

Then click on "End-User License Agreement".

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

The End-User License Agreement states quite clearly:

"You may install, use, access, display and run one copy
of the Software on a single computer...."

You can install one (1) copy of Windows XP on one (1) computer.
Additional installations requires additional licenses (Product Keys)
for each installation on a different computer.

Different operating systems are just fine.
When you run the XP networking wizard you will be given an option to create
an installation disk for the other computers on the network.
This disk will contain all the necessary files for networking a computer not
running XP as well as the wizard to help you do so.
As far as the missing XP disk you do have options there:

(1) It is perfectly legal to burn a copy of a friends XP disk as long as you
don't use his/her Product Key when installing ot activating. You need to use
yours from the lost disk.
If you also lost that you can retreive it from your computer with one of the
following:

or
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php

(2) You can purchase a replacement CD from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];326246

And Carey already told you in his post exactly what to do about your sons
Laptop.
