PPT -> HTML conversion problems - Symbols

My Symbols inserted into PPT 2003 wont convert to HTML.
Try the following

1. Open a PPT page
2. add muu char via main menu "Insert > Symbol" - code 117 (font=Symbol)
3. add 2nd muu char like this
type lowercase "u". Select it and set the font=Symbol via the toolbar
font dropdown.
4. Export to HTML

The first muu is unreadable in HTML -- just a ? char
<span style='font-family:Symbol;'></span>

The second muu is ok
<span style='font-family:Symbol;'>u</span>

I'm actually trying to convert this PPT to HTML using Producer.
All the Chemistry symbols are unreadable :-(

Ideas?

Odd. It works as expected here in PPT2003 (and on looking at the HTML, I see
that both look more like your second example - it doesn't replicate the first).

Which version of PPT are you using?
