PPT files act like PPS files and run on double click - Why?

I must have done something to screw up the program settings (2003).
When I double click a ppt file, it starts playing like a pps file. It
used to open in Powerpoint into the slide format ready to edit (or
whatever). Not sure what I have done to alter the motions but if you
can help, I'd appreciate it. I like it the way it was.
