PPT file changed after viewing

Sebastian

Hi there,

some of my powerpoint files increase in size by ca. 2 KB after opening and
closing them without saving. This behaviour of Powerpoint is quite annoying
because my files (and those of others) are stored in a subversion system
which erroneously detects a new version due to file size increase.

1) Does someone know why this happens? What are the reasons that some files
change and some don't?

2) Does someone know whether this behaviour can be changed?

Thanks,

Sebastian

I believe this is a bug.

But probably not relevant to your issue.

Interesting link but probably a different issue I agree...

I checked the last modified date in the file properties dialog - the date
does not change! Strange thing...

To summarize: powerpoint (2007 btw) definitly changes my file when I open it
without saving but the last modified date remains the same.

I find this very annoying, too.

PowerPoint adds the name of the user who opened the presentation into the
file and saves it without asking and without adjusting properties like the
last saved date etc. (Of course only if the file itself is not marked as
read-only.)

I don't think there is anything you can do about. But if I'm right, this
happens just with presentations that are saved in the "old" file format
(ppt). If a pptx-presentation is opened, PowerPoint creates (like Word) a
hidden temporary file (named "~$filename.pptx") in the same folder. I guess
all info about the user is now stored in this file. Once the presentation is
closed again, the file is automatically removed.
