PPT 03 vs 07 PNG Issue

Converted 03 presentation - which looks fine in 03 on other computer; to 07
presentation on new computer.

Some of my PNG"s have blue halo/outline around them.
When I re-insert the PNG / set transperancy - the halo/outline goes away.
If I then crop the picture - it comes back.

The only solution I have found at this point is to re-insert the PNG, crop,
set transparent color and resave. Then re-insert the new version; from there
I can add effects, etc. without problem.

Is there another solution to this problem?
Many of my PPT presentations are continually updated; and it requires doing
a lot of re-work to get earlier presentations to look correct.

I can't quite follow what's happening here. Can you give us step by step
instructions for what you're doing?

If you can post an image and/or a slide somewhere that exhibits this issue,
that might also be helpful.
