PP Slides from DV Video

I've been asked to make still pictures from miniDV video for a PowerPoint
presentation. I've not worked with PP before. What size should they be and
in what format? DV video is 720 X 480 and I make de-interlaced .jpg pictures
for printing hard copies. Would it be different for PP? I'd like to deliver
the pictures on a CD.
Thanks.

ppt can take most any size - you can crop, or just let the pic lap over the edge of the slide. The frame is 4x3, so best sizes are 640x480, 720x512, 800x600, 1024x768, or 1280x1024. .jpg is just fine.

The best resolution for full-screen images is the video resolution of the
system on which it'll be played back. Or in short, you probably can't tell up
front, but 1024 x 768 seems a safe bet most of the time.

Try a few images as is; either PPT will have to scale them up or you will in
some other program. If PPT does a decent job of it, go for it ... the smaller
images will mean smaller files.

Hi Craig,

What program are u using for capture....Premiere...and do you use Photoshop?

I normally capture the still + export in premiere, then use PS to add a
feathered vignette to the still image to eliminate harsh black edges ( &
also use PS to clean up the image ) before importing into PP.

Powerpoint is very good for captured video stills... I recently showed 60+
slides at a conference for a client...the video had that raw live feel,
superior to the staged still photographs of other PP presentations on the
day.

hope this helps

Thanks for all your help, and thanks Paul for your phone call. I capture in
Final Cut pro (Mac) and will probably go to Photoshop Elements on my PC to
add a logo to each one and text to some others. I'll size to 640 X 480, as
increasing the size and consequently the number of pixels to 1024 X 768
would just lower the resolution, no? Should I save as a .PNG rather than
..JPG? I understand PPT likes PNGs best.

Hello Craig

The 640 X 480 will look fine in a 1024 X 768 slide, it also gives you room
for added text/graphic elements. If you do want to size up, use the
Edit-Transform-Resize tool in PS and see if you can increase the dimensions
that way.
I use Jpegs all the time without any problems (so far).

Best of luck with your project.

Paul
