PP presentation with 'pictures from file' not already in pp?

How to create a new pp with many images from an existing folder not already
in pp ? I can get to the BROWSE button and locate the image(s) I want but not
further. No "INSERT" the picture.

I'm guessing that the insert button is 'grayed' out as you have not yet
clicked an individual image filename. Or the file is not something
powerpoint can insert as a picture
