I do not have Powerpoint in my Windows XP Home. If I
download and install the file PPView97.exe, will I then
be able to open and read a .ppt file using this viewer?

Read the link provided by Harry Ohrn for what is not supported in the
PPView97.exe for later versions of Power Point.

Use it for now.

I understand that there will be an updated Power Point 2003 version
available about the time Office 2003 is released {Oct 21}.

Yes. It may miss out on any enhancements in Powerpoint since it was
written, but you are not likely to run into those
