I have ppt 2003 on my pc. I have receved a couple of files with .pps as the
extension which to my knowledge I should be able to view with the ppt viewer.
When I tell the file to open it with the viewer, I can see the viewer in my
taskbar but not on my desktop. It simply does not work so i have to do the
ctrl-alt-del command to close down the program.

Anybody have any suggestions for me what could be wrong and how to correct it?

Open PPT. Go to Slide Show|Set up Show. Make sure it says to play on
"primary monitor."

It does say so but it still does not open

How are you telling the files to open with the PPT Viewer? Is there a reason
you're using the Viewer to view the files and not just using PPT itself?

I recieve files with a pps extension and then when you click on them you can
pick a program to open it and I can open them with ppt but then it is shown
as a slide show.

If you set PowerPoint to play on "primary monitor" as described below, then
when you click and it asks you to select a program to view it with, choose
PowerPoint, not the PowerPoint Viewer.

Can't run slideshow / screen show won't start
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00426.htm

That should let PPT open up in slide show view and not just be minimized on
your task bar. If it's not working, I'm not sure what to suggest. I guess
maybe try Changing a File Association, Repairing broken File Associations
