Just seeking to clarify (for general interest really) how powerpoint files
(ppt & pps) can play online
even if you have not used the "Save as web page" option. Is it the case
that the browser is using the powerpoint application on the individual users
machine - & so if a user didn't have powerpoint then he wouldn't be able to
see anything. Or is the browser using a microsoft plug-in similar to the
shockwave flash plugin. If currently there isn't a powerpoint browser
plug-in then does anyone think microsoft may be tempted to develop one - and
in the process knock-out various rival products such as Macromedia's Breeze?

If the user doesn't have PPT or the viewer, yes; the browser can't play PPT
files natively; there are no plug-ins. Since the viewer is free and, in
effect, functions as a plug-in if installed, I don't see the need for a
separate plug-in.
