Powerpoint music problem

I wonder if someone can help me. In the past, I've received some lovely
Powerpoint shows (.pps) in email with music. They open full screen as
soon as I click on the link in the email. I've been trying to do
something similar for a first time. I've read everything I could find
about doing it and have it pretty much figured out... except...... the
music is a problem. I wanted to have an MP3 from my hard drive to
accompany the slide show. And, of course, the MP3 will play just fine
on my computer but won't work when I send it to someone.

So.... I read about using the program called Cdex to convert the MP3 to
WAV file that could be embedded in the show. I downloaded that progranm
converted the file.. and put the music file in the same folder as the
show, etc, as advised. Also increased the maximum size of the music
file as recommended in the settings of Powerpoint. I created a totally
new .pps with the new wav file but the music won't even play on MY
computer now doing it that way when I try to view the show. I'm
obviously doing something wrong. I'm using Powerpoint 2000 and the CDex
version is 150 (I learned that 151 won't work with Windows98 which is
what I have).

Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong.. ???? I'd
really appreciate any tips you might have. Sorry about such a long
message but I'm trying to make sure I'm clear about my problem.

Thank you......

If you can't get all what you have tried to work and it don't. You can put the
mp3 file into the same folder as your presentation. Then, insert it into your
presentation and save it as a .pps file then send it and the mp3 file to your
friends. when they open your email and save the files it should play as you
expected on their systems as long as they have the PowerPoint viewer of full
version of PowerPoint installed on their system.

Thank you for the reply. I guess I knew that sending the MP3 file as
well as the show would work but I'm wondering how, when people send me a
show, there is no extra mp3 file sent along with it. Just click on the
*.pps link in the email message and away it goes... music and all. And
the file size isn't large at all either. That's what I'd really like to
be able to do. I keep thinking there's something I'm missing
here...probably some simple step I'm not getting... at least that's what
I was hoping. It's a puzzle. Everything I've read seems to suggest that
what I've done should work but no such luck.

Thanks again for your reply... I may have to do it the way you
recommend. But perhaps someone else has another idea... ???

Hi there. Not sure if this will help, but...
1. Make sure all your music files are in the same folder as your ppt
slideshow.
2. Click on "File" in the drop down menu and choose "Pack and Go" - it will
prompt you to save in a pre selected file.
3. save it somewhere on your hard drive (not a network drive)
4. all the pictures and sound files should be compressed and ready to take
with you anywhere or to send to anyone.

Just a thought... good luck
Marlene

If there is no MP3 file coming with your presentation, then it is a wav file,
and it is embedded in the presentation. There are utility programs out there
that will change the header information in the MP3 file into thinking that it is
a wav file and this will allow you to insert the music into your presentation
check it out here http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00155.htm

Thank you, Marlene... I tried what you suggested and it turns the show
into a file with a .ppz extension that Powerpoint didn't open. I'm
pretty dumb about all this and I'm likely missing something obvious.
I've never done anything with Powerpoint before and I'm thinking I may
never be able to... it continues to be a puzzle. :( However, I'll keep
reading and trying anything suggested. Thanks again... I appreciate
your trying to help.

Thank you again, Michael... As mentioned in my first message (see
following), I did try the program that adds a header but that didn't
work out for me either. I do appreciate your suggestions... I'm
anxious to try any tip I read about. Maybe some day, I'll finally get
it but right now, I'm not very hopeful.

I guess that it is PowerPoint under Win98 that does not like the changed MP3
file. I'm using CDex 1.51 on a Win98 machine. It does the conversion OK. It just
won't work in PowerPoint 2002 in my case on the 98 machine. Move the
presentation to an XP machine and it plays in the presentation just fine.

An addendum that Steve R might like to add to FAQ00155

I'm using CDex 1.51 on a Win98 machine. It does the conversion OK. It just
won't work in PowerPoint 2002 in my case on the 98 machine. Move the
presentation to an XP machine and it plays in the presentation just fine.

I'll add this, Michael. Thanks.

Just to recap... I'm using Windows98 and Powerpoint Version 2000 and
CDex 1.50. Perhaps it is something funny with my computer. I
downloaded CDex 151 first and every time I tried to open it, I would
only get the dreaded "blue screen". I UNinstalled that one and then
downloaded and installed CDex 1.50 and it works fine.. seems to do the
conversion with no problem. It's interesting that the converted file
plays just fine in my Winamp player but when I add it to a Powerpoint
show, the music won't play... on my computer anyway. Perhaps it might
on a computer with XP.. ??? I guess I'd better find someone to try that
with.

I'm beginning to think I'll never get it figured out but thanks so much
again for your time. I appreciate it.
