PowerPoint hangs inserting picture

I made a PP presentation last week and had no problem inserting my own photos
onto the slides. Today when I needto add a photo the computer hangs after
clicking Insert From File option. A chekc of the Task Manager reveals the
message - Nopt Responding -

What can I do to resolve the problem?

Have you installed any updates lately?

Users report that uninstalling the KB908531 update solves similar-sounding
problems.

Thanks for the information. I had the same issue, and removing KB908531
resolved the problem. Removing it also resolved issues I was experiencing
with IE where, after a web address was entered, it would just hang and go
nowhere.

However, after removing KB908531, I was immediately notified that I needed
to install it. Of course I don't want to do that, but I'm not sure what to
do other than ignore all future update notifications. Do you know if this
defective update is being removed from distribution, or fixed by a another
patch. If future updates are downloaded, it there a way to selectively
install them?

Thanks

Bill, thanks for the confirmation on that.

You can change the auto update settings to make this easier to cope with.
Either set it off temporarily until a fix is made available or set 'em to "download
but let me choose" and leave that one off at the other end of the proverbial ten
foot pole.

See above.

I'd expect MS is aware of the problem and working on a fix by now.

I too had the same problem with both Powerpoint and Publisher. I removed the
update and everything works fine. I'm not sure how I would have found which
file to remove though without the file name in provided this thread. Where
can I find a list of updates that have been automatically installed on my
computer?

I'm not sure they're all listed here, but if you look at Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, there should be a LOT of them there. You may need to put a check next to
"Show updates" at the top of the dialog box. It even shows you what date the update was
installed. Handy.

Thank you all so much! This problem has been driving me crazy for the last
few days and I have a huge Powerpoint presentation due. You've made my life
much easier...for the time being. The fix worked like a charm!
