Powerpoint file size keeps growing

If I save a powerpoint file to a different file than the file I'm currently
working on, the new powerpoint file becomes much smaller. For example on a
recent powerpoint file I'm working on the file size is 24MB. If I save the
file to a new powerpoint file the file size becomes 15MB. So why is it that
the original file cannot reduce it's own size? Was this method of saving
changes implemented so that the save/creation time could be greatly reduced
especially for large files?

You will need to turn off fast saves.
To do so,
click Tools > Options > Save.
Uncheck Allow fast saves.

There is an article in Microsoft which you can take a look at for more
information. See under heading "Turn off Allow fast saves":

Hope it helps.

That's because your working file contains previous versions so you can undo
things or close it and not accept changes. Closing and not keeping changes
returns the file to its original version. When you save it you only save
the most current version and lose the memory of previous stuff.
