PowerPoint 2007 Stacked Characters

In the past couple of days all Powerpoint files i open or create will stack
all the characters in "pile" at the left margin or centered on line. It
appears to be a character spacing issue but the using the character spacing
tool only allows for that one line to be read. Has any seen this issue and
have a solution?
