Powerpoint 2003 repeat command

Megan

I'm running powerpoint 2003 on a linux machine and I seem to be having
a number of problems running hot keys. When I press Ctrl Y or F4 to
perform the repeat command I get beeped at. The ctrl Y works in excel
perfectly however.
I really need to activate the repeat command. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Out of curiosity, is this under a Windows emulator of some sort?

It may be that either the emulator or linux itself "owns" those keystrokes for
its own purposes and doesn't pass them along to PPT.

Yes we are running an emulator (sorry I don't know enough about it to
give you more details than that)
If the emulator or linux "owns" the ctrl Y key - why does the repeat
function work in excel when I press Ctrl Y??
Also I have the same problem on another PC. I think it has something
to do with the version of ppt as I am running an older version on a
different PC which works fine.

Probably because the emulator or linux *doesn't* own the key.

What version are you having trouble with?

Sorry I gave you the wrong information there - I am actually only dual
booting not running an emulator.
I am running powerpoint version 2003.

The repeat key in PPT doesn't work exactly like it did in previous versions.

For instance, on some objects, if you change a line width using the icon on
the Drawing toolbar, and then select another object and use F4 on it, the
line width won't change.

However, if you double-click the object and use the Format Object dialog
that comes up to make whatever change, then select a different object and F4
it, the change will take.

My line width example isn't a good one, as the line width does actually work
with F4. I just can't access my notes right now to give you a good example.
But using the Format Object dialog instead of an icon to make initial
formatting does seem to resolve the issue when it does occur.

See Echo's post ... I think perhaps she's nailed it.

My problem is with cropping images. I want to repeat a
crop/resize/position command. Is there any way to do this? I have
tried using the format option as well as using the tool to crop.
Any ideas?

Actually, yes. We have an add-in called ShapeStyles that allows you to memorize
nearly all the formatting of a shape and apply it to other shapes.

It's always done size/position and it happens I've just added picture formatting
(including crop) to it as well.

If you'd like to give it a try, download the demo at http:\\shapestyles.pptools.com
then shoot me an email at steve at-sign pptools dot com (I'll need to send you the
most recent version, not yet available for download).

This isn't a sales call. <g> The demo may do all you need; it's fully functional
but limits the number of styles you can create.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the Critical
Update or Service Pack 1 for Office 2003 as soon as possible. From
PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for Updates".]

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329820]

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the functionality that you are looking for
without resorting to VBA or add-ins.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide this kind of functionality natively (not requiring
add-ins or ActiveX controls), don't forget to send your feedback (in YOUR
OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft by either:

PREFERRED METHOD:

A) If you are using Microsoft's web-based, online newsreader for Office
communities (http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx),
click on the "New" drop-down menu and choose "Suggestion for Microsoft"
from directly within the newsreader web page.

OR, NEXT BEST METHOD:

B) If you are using another newsreader (such as Microsoft Outlook Express),
submit your suggestion using your web browser at the following address:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
