Powerpoint 2003 crashed when opening only one certain presentation

When opening one particular presentation, Powerpoint crashes and has the
message, "microsoft office powerpoint has encountered a problem and needs to
close". On my laptop, I can open the file fine without any problems but when
I transfer it to my desktop (tried different locations, different names,
etc.) Powerpoint on my desktop crashes after 4-5seconds of trying to open the
file. I have no add-ons and cannot even copy all the slides and paste to a
new presentation; still crashes. I can open any other presentation, just not
this one. Any suggestions?

Do you have the latest service pack for Office 2003 installed? That may
resolve the issue.

I have SP3 installed on both.

You might try Insert | Slides from File, then and see if you can insert the
slides into a new presentation. Sounds as if there's something inside this
particular file that's causing issues, and you may be able to use the Insert
from File to insert the slides individually until you can figure out which
one is causing the problem.

It's odd, though, that you can open the file on one computer, but not on the
other. What's different about the systems?

I know I emailed you as well, but I just got the discussion board working
again for me.

I tried your suggestion and Powerpoint crashes when it tries to show the
slides in the selection window. As for the computers, the desktop that keeps
crashing is a Gateway and the laptop that it is able to open on is an HP.

Wow, that's bizarre. (Sorry, I don't recall getting an email from you.)

I would try changing hardware acceleration on the problem system. Here are
instrux:

How to set graphics hardware acceleration back
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00129.htm

I think I would also try round-tripping the presentation. Here are instrux
for that:

http://www.pptworkbench.com/html/round_trip.htm

Round-tripping often weeds out oddities that might cause PPT to crash.

You also may want to look in Windows Control Panel, Add-Remove Programs to
double-check and make sure you have the latest service pack (SP3) for Office
2003 installed. (There's a box in the Add-Remove Programs dialog you can
check for "show updates.")
