Powerpoint 2000 to VCD?

I know, this one screams FAQ, but I can't find an answer. Sorry in
advance.

I have a Powerpoint 2000 show of pictures from my kid's soccer league,
set to music (mp3 files attached to certain slides).

At my disposal I have Nero Express, Power Point 2000, and a DVD/CD
burning drive.

How do I use this (plus perhaps some decent free software) to make
either a video CD, or a DVD that will play on a standard player?

Or failing in that, just a single (if large) file that I can allow
people to download that will play the show (for example, maybe an exe
that plays the pictures and sound)? When I did this last year, I zipped
the .pps file and the mp3 files into an archive and had people download
that, but too many people couldn't figure out how to extract the files,
save them to the same directory, etc.

I'd probably do an autorun CD. Less work (and cost) than output to video for
a DVD (or a video CD, for that matter). Your recipients would have to play
the file on a computer, though.

Many programs will enable you to convert ppt to dvd, at the low end
there's ProDVD's PowerPoint DVD Maker, If you want a more practical
tool, I recommend Wondershare PPT2DVD(http://www.ppt-to-dvd.com),never
miss it.

Hi! I have better one to recommend on this type of problem!! Does your
problem is viewing picture with matching background music??? if this is
so, then go to this link http://www.dvd-photo-slideshow.com/

The above link is the best! if you want to view your picture on DVD
player or VCD player with your own music background then watch to TV.
Nedless to do ONE-BY-ONE to get slide transition or whatever like
custom animation that is very tiring and boring...because this software
has built-in 200plus transition that would automatically applies to
your picture! now needless to play at your computer anymore for viewing
picture purpose only just play this in your home dvd and watch on TV
screen... deosn't it sounds good the same as you're watching movie in a
wide screen... moreso, this software has own burner instead of using
nero or elses! importantly you have CD-writer drive or DVD drive on
your PC to burn this. ENJOY!!!!

Much as I appreciate the suggestions offered so far, all involve
software that costs $50-100. For someone who would use such an
application regularly, that's no big deal. But for me to buy it to use
just once, on something I'm doing as a volunteer, makes no sense (as
cheapskate as I admit that sounds).

Any worthwhile suggestions that would fit my cheapskate budget?
