Power question

Hey, I understand that I could be in the wrong group, but this one seemed
generic enough so I thought I would try.

Here is my scenario: When power cord plugged into desktop machine all fans
energize, HDD light on. *Removed power switch at motherboard* SAME symptoms.

So it is not a bad power switch.

Also no video out. Switch does nothing, held in, quick push, nothing,
although there is 'action' in the switch (when connected to MB)

My verditct right now is bad motherboard; replace.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for any who answer.

I think your machine is powering up when you plug in the power becuase of
your BIOS settings. There may be a setting to adjust the power state when AC
power reusmes. In your case you may have it set to "Power On". Although you
disconnected the front power switch, this will do nothing. The mother board
can still power on regardless. The front panel power switch simply shorts
the two power pins which tells the mobo to power up.

As with no video out, try reinstalling the video card. Take it out of the
slot, clean the slot with some air-in-a-can, check that the pins are in good
condidtion, etc... Also, if you have a separate power connector for your
video card, try reseating that (at both the video card end, and the power
supply end). I had a similar issue a few weeks ago - my system powered up
and the speakers output a "VGA Test Failed" Warning. I was getting pretty
freaked out...tried reseating the card, called tech support, even had the RMA
number ready to go. However, the power cable came loose on the end at the
power supply (I check the end going into the card).

Give that a shot - if you still get no VGA output, I'd try the card in a
different system to see if the card is good. Otherwise, I'd say time for a
new motherboard.

Good luck.
