Power Point PASTE not working - HELP!

G

Guest

For months i have been copying text from .pdf files and pasting it into text
boxes in PowerPoint. Suddenly it will not work. CTRL+V does not work, and
neither does right-click Paste, nor does Edit Paste work. However, if I
paste the text into a MS Word doc, and then copy from there and paste into
PowerPoint, then those functions work.

If I use the clipboard menu bar on the right of the screen in PowerPoint,
the paste function works. However, it takes me too long to open that menu
and click on the clipboard item. I have thousands of copy and pastes to do,
so I need to use CTRL+V, and like I said, it has worked for months.

Did I accidentally switch something off?

You might start by disabling any add-ins you have running.

Shut down PPT, do a search for all *.PPA files, and rename them to *.OLD or
something.

I only had one .ppa file, and I renamed it to .old and this did not fix the
problem.

Wow, I don't know then. It's odd that you can paste the text okay into Word,
but not into PPT.

If you paste the text onto your slide and then click Edit on the menu bar,
what does the first entry show? I'm asking because I ran into something
weird the other day where, when I'd paste slides into slide sorter view, I
wouldn't see the paste options button. When I looked at the Edit menu,
instead of "Undo Paste (Ctrl+Z)," it would say "Undo Last (Ctrl+Z)." That
helped me track it down to an add-in that was performing its function
immediately after I'd paste in the slides.

Also, and it's a long shot, does it paste if you hit the paste icon on the
PPT toolbar?

Finally, which version of PPT, and what version of what PDF-reading software
are you using?

If I click paste, and I click Edit, the first entry is Undo Paste. When I
click paste in the new text box, I just get a blinking cursor.

I ran the Help/Detect and Repair function and that did not fix it either.

If I click the Paste Icon, again, it does not work.

I am using PowerPoint 2003, (11.6564.6568) SP2. I checked for Windows
updates today and my software is updated.

I am using Adobe Reader 7.0.5 and I have been using these two programs for
making presentations for the past 8 months or so, with no problems.

Interesting that I can paste from Word to PPT. I can paste from Adobe to
Word.

Shouldn't someone from Microsoft be concerned about this? Thanks for your
help, keep bringing it on!

Thanks for the additional info.

Well, if there were lots of reports of it, or if we have repro steps, I'm
sure they will be. But until then, it's rather an isolated incident. I mean,
you're welcome to call Microsoft Product Support if you want -- but that
costs money, and this newsgroup is free. :) (If you do decide to call them,
and if you come up with an answer, please post back and let us know what the
cause is!)

If your paste technique from Acrobat Reader to PPT has been working fine,
but all of a sudden isn't, then we have to figure out what's changed on your
system. Have you installed any software recently (oat least since the last
time you can remember pasting from Reader to PPT and having it work okay)?

How are you selecting the text in the PDF? I downloaded and installed
Acrobat Reader 7.0.5, clicked the "select tool" icon on the toolbar, and
selected some text in a PDF. I switched to PPT and pasted. When copying, I
tried both Ctrl+C and right-click-choose-copy to clipboard. When pasting
(into PPT 2003 SP2), I tried Ctrl+V onto the slide itself, into a blank
placeholder, and into a blank textbox. All copies and pastes worked fine.

First, shut the computer down, take five, start it back up and try again.
If that doesn't do it, the next step is to figure out what's changed since it
last worked?

Interestingly, I think it is my PPT presentation that is corrupt, not either
software.

The presentation is now a large master document of 267 slides, which I will
cut down to 5 or 10 presentations at a later date. Currently I just continue
to build, sometimes copying and pasting previous slides.

Since I am suspect of the document, I did a File/Save As and saved a copy.
Then I deleted all of the slides except 2 in the PPT copy. When I did the
paste function in the new document, it worked!

Is there a maximum size for PPT presentations? Mine is 41 MB. If that is
not the problem, then perhaps one of the slides is corrupting the file. I
hope not, because I would have to delete one slide at a time, and test each
time - which could be 265 tests!

Any ideas?

Nice detective work. I just assumed this was happening in all
presentations -- duh, I should have asked!

There's not a max size for presentations -- it's dependent on your system
and its resources. I don't think either 267 slides or 41 MB is that huge --
I've seen much worse.

I think your idea about one slide causing the problem is worth
investigating. You can (more than likely) cut down on the number of tests by
testing one half of the presentation, then continually cutting the number of
slides in half until you isolate the problem slide.
