Power Options

When I finish using the compter at night, I press the sleep button on my
keyboard and it puts the system in standby (i.e. the monitor goes into a low
power state and the hard drive is powered down). I have also set the system
to automatically restart each morning at 8:30 am. What I have noticed is
that at 8:30 am the system will awake but I don't think it restarts. The
hard drive will "whirl up" and the monitor comes on and I am then prompted
for my password to get back to the desktop. The icons in the task tray are
already there...not like when you restart and they appear one at a time. If
I don't put the system to sleep at night by pressing the sleep button on the
keyboard the system will restart each morning the way its suppose to. Do I
need to change a setting in the Powwer Options to get it to fully restart
after being in sleep mode overnight?

It is just fine, "sleep" saves power and time. The computer
does not have to do a cold boot, which rakes time.

Darrell, I have been told it is not good to have your hard drive power up and
power down repeatedly; therefore, my PC runs 24/7. what are the pro's and
con's to running non-stop and pro's and con's to using Standby?

In Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced, uncheck 'Prompt for
password on return from standby'.

You may also have the setting related to screensavers checked too, at
Control Panel - Display - screensavers, make sure ' on resume, password
protect' is not checked

When I turn on my computer, before it boots up, I want to have to enter a
password. I would call it a power-on password. Do any of you know how to
set this up? I have one to log into my user account but I want one for even
before that so you must use it to enter ANY account. Any one can help me?

Go into your computer's bios and set one up - often the 'del' key just after
boot.

@Darrell - Look for a way to wake the system up first - basically, you want
to bring the system out of standby, and then have it restart itself.
Although, it might be more efficient to shut the system down outright at
night and start it up again in the morning.

@Dwight - Your BIOS might be able to handle that one. Look for a boot
password or something along those lines.

Enter the BIOS setup mode (you will see a message displayed when you first
turn on the PC to press a specific key on the keyboard) and see if has a
password option.
