Power Options

Claude Beck

I recently went to Control Panel on my latop and, much to my surprise, the
Power Options icon is missing. I can't seem to find any reference to the
power options controls anyplace. Can anyone give me some help here?

Many thanx in advance.

Can you get to Power Options by typing powercfg.cpl in Start > Run?

Yep! That takes me to Power Options Properties. But I didn't see anything
there that'll get the icon back into Control Panel. Any more info?

Firstly, make sure you have Control Panel in classic view instead of
category view. If you still can't see the icon, open the Registry
Editor and browse to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load". If
powercfg.cpl is there, delete that entry.

I don't usually like to mess with the registry but I'm gonna give 'er a try.
Many thanx for the information.

Carefully does it! If you're unsure, maybe export that particular
branch before you make any changes.

Hi, Richard;
Didn't get into any trouble, maybe just because powercfg.cpl wasn't there. I
tried to "restore" the system but that didn't help either. Any more ideas,
please? Thanx.

Check out Tweak UI in Microsoft's PowerToys for XP. It is available for
download directly from Microsoft.

I checked Tweak UI and "powercfg.cpl" is in there and checked. Still doesn't
show up, though. Fact is, the entire Classic View of Control Panel is gone
now. No telling what I did to that one! Category View seems to be intact
yet. Maybe I should just keep my fingers in my pockets!

Everything is back to normal! Here's how I did it . . .

In TweakUI/Control Panel there is a list of all the programs that give you
the options in the control panel.. I copied that list.

Then, using FreshUI, I went to Windows Interface/Control Panel/Show Folders
in Control Panel and input the list I copied from TweakUI. Everything came
up roses.

Admittedly, that sounds like a clunky way to do things, and I'm sure it
probably is.But it worked!

Now, if anybody knows an easier way, I'd be glad to hear that, too. Thanks
for your help, Richard, I couldn't have done it without you.
