I can't get my computer to shut off the monitor after 10 minutes like it used
to. It also won't go into standby, hibernation, etc. The desktop still
shows no matter what I set in power management. It was working fine until
about 3 days ago. I've restarted, cold booted, etc.
Anh ideas?

you can restore vital system files by repairing your current windows
installation

insert windows cd > setup > new install > repair current installation

How do you do that if your pc came w/o instal disc. This pc had me create a
b/u imaged set. Purpose is for total system restore to factory default. I
don't want to go there...

If you search the MS kb, under winxp for 'Power Management' you will come up
with a whole raft of articles, some of which mention a hotfix only
obtainable direct from MS Tech
Since the problem 'seems' to have occured after the latest security updates,
you might want to check either your PC supplier or mobo manu and see if they
have released any Bios or chipset updated drivers, sometimes these help.

I tried that, but when I used my original XP Pro CD, I got an error message
that I now have a newer version (SP2). I also tried restoring from a couple
of weeks ago, but got a message that there had been no changes to my computer
since then.
