Does a computer (laptop) use much electricity when left continuously running
whilst connected to mains supply? I know about my power options hibernate
etc but I dont bother with them.

It uses a fraction of the power used by a desktop machine, so I would not
worry about the electricity bill. Still, you could turn off the hard drive
after a time, just because desktops are easier to jostle, and it's better if
nothing is moving internally when external disturbances occur.

my old p3/850 Toshiba laptop is on 24/7 and just happens to have been
plugged into a Kill-A-Watt device for a while...
14.95 kWh in 866 hours.
Last time I figured it was like $1.12 per month here.

Look at the watt numbers on the adapter. The laptop will use less than that.
