Power buttons no longer work

Guest

I've had my new Dell desktop PC for a month.

The power buttons on the screen, (restart, shutdown) were working but now it
hangs. I get the blue Vista shutdown screen, then I get a black screen then
it just sits. I have to manually pull the plug to switch off.

If any kind brilliant person can help you may just save me from a total
nervous breakdown!

thanks
Aidan

Something to try;

Create a desktop Shutdown Icon,

Right click on the desktop,
Select New - Shortcut,
Type: Shortcut.exe -s -t 05
Click Next, and see or type the name Shutdown,
Click Finish.

You should see an Icon on your desktop named Shutdown.
Double click it.

Post back if it works.

Thanks Jerry - I tried it (replacing your typo) but same problem. The
shutting down screen appears and then a black screen and no shut down.

I forgot to say that there is also a problem on power up. I get the choice
of starting windows normally (does not work) or using the startup repair
function. I use the latter which takes 20 mins! Really irritating.

Thanks for your suggestion however Jerry - appreciated!

That was a bad Typo,
(should have been Shutdown.exe -s -r 05)
Thanks for trying it out

If you replace the letter S with R it should do a Reboot.

Another thing to try;
On the Start-Run line,
type: SFC /SCANNOW and hit return.
This should replace any missing or corrupt files.

I think I'll go back to bed,
That should be - Shutdown.exe -s -t 00,
and - Shutdown.exe -r -t 00

If you have the Vista media you could consider doing a repair/install. It
would preserve your applications/settings while fixing the OS. You would
need to re-download MS security updates afterward. I've done this numerous
times with XP and it's the best fix for OS problems short of formatting the
disk.

Thanks for that! Reinstallation of Vista has been in the back of my mind but
to be honest I'm not keen to do it - my experiences of Vista have not been
great. I initially upgraded my Xp system to Vista home and things were never
the same. When I bought a new PC with Windows home premium I hoped all would
be solved but I've been plagued with problems - the power down problems are
the latest. Who knows what could happen if I reinstalled! Perhaps a totally
different OS is required! However I may re-install!
