Any nee info on this maladay?

Since that does not go to a specific post - I assume you mean you followed
methods 1 & 2 from this knowledge base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If so - and the only trouble you are having is with Microsoft Office -- what
version, what happens if you manually try to install them and do you have
your original Office installation media available when installing?

Absent any error messages associated with these failed installs,

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

No errors. I didnt finally figure it out though via an endless Net search.
I had "previous version program file folders listed:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12

I deleted 11, renamed Office12 to Office12OLD and rean the office repair.
Then updates worked.
