Post Upgrade and trouble with DNS Registering

J

James W. Long

Dear Ace:
upgraded my NT4 PDC to w2kadv ad integrated DNS
today.
I still have these errors and am not sure If I should yank the
dns server and reinstall that or what.
Honest DNS is there and running, I can ping jewelntserver,
jewelntserver.jewelconsulting.org,
but I can't ping jewelntserver.org (the domain).

only one nic in the machine.

it passes the first simple DNS test, but the recursive
test fails, but thats meaningless because there is no way for the
machine to get out to the internet yet, it and its clients
are all on one lan on the 10 subnet.

I dont know how to follow the instructions given in the
second error message. I dont know how to add
these records.

I have deleted the (.) root zone.

Here is an ipconfig readout.

C:\winnt:ipconfig /all

also my dde service is hanging on start but ends up running.

and for some reason w2kadv disables write caching
on drive C, is that normal?

Thank you,

If you're getting these two errors and not being able to ping
jewelntserver.org, then its telling me the LdapIpAddress, which looks like:

jewelconsulting.org
(same as parent) A 10.0.050

appear to be missing and tells me that registration is not occuring.

You don't manually add those records. The Netlogon service does that for
you.

Main question: Did you allow updates on the zone?

As for the recursive test, you need a Forwarder for that to pass. You also
need a default gateway to get to the forwarder, so when you do allow
Internet connectivity, that test will pass.

James, want me to remote into this thing?

woa I better back up.

first I had to enable dynamic updates.
I determined it was a just a standard primary zone.
I restarted net logon.
- bang got all the info.
then I set the zone as ad integrated.
so I see "default first zone name" in some places.
(are those ok to leave as is?)
many less error messages now, many less. just a few remain.

why would dde hang in a start pending state?
best I can figgure is it wasnt started when it was needed
but subsequently suceeded. how can I fix that?

and that one about irpstacksize really bothers me.
I cranked it up 4 notches, no difference.

I hope I am on the right track.

Thanks
James W. Long.
