Post-SP2 Network ID change causes error

It seems that a new or modified component in SP2 latches onto the workgroup
Computer Name and kicks up a fuss if you change it. Prior to installing SP2
the name can be changed on demand, but after SP2, I get an error message
from the Visual C++ Runtime Library. Trouble is, the error message is
corrupted and gives no help in sorting out why the message appears.

Does anyone know why C++ runtime complains when the Computer Name is changed
and what can be done about it?

There should be no scripting or ActiveX error. Check thoroughly for
virus in Safe Mode, run one of SpyBot or Ad-Aware. I do agree about the
workgroup problem, but from my troubleshooting, it involves not having
ICS/ICF Service started, even if not sharing a connection or not using
the Windows Firewall, but in that case it is an RPC Server error related
to the service.

I had the same issue today. I have 5 XP machines, 4 connected to the new
domain with out a hitch. The other one which does have SP 2, the others do
not, will not connect to the SBS2K3 server. I get access is denied or mapped
drives connot be connected to user IDs.
I don't understand.
