Post Clean Install Audio problem

I'm going to post this here, after narrowing but not solving the
problem on a couple of MSI motherboard-dedicated forums. Yesterday, I
installed a new MB and CPU (MSI K8NGM2-FID/Athlon 64/3000), which has
integrated audio and video. Then I formatted the HDD, did a clean
install of XP (using a slipstreamed CD with SP2), loaded the latest MSI
BIOS and drivers, finished the Windows update, and then did lots of
reinstallation of applications. Most everything has worked out just
fine except for one thing: no audio. After some back and forth online
to figure out why no audio device was showing in the Control Panel, I
noticed that while the latest MSI Realtek drivers were appearing to
install correctly, in fact they were not. There's supposed to be an
icon in the system tray, an Azalia audio item in the Control Panel, and
some audio-related apps in other places. Instead, they aren't there
and the Realtek entry in Add/Remove Programs is X'd out, as are most of
the applications in the Realtek folder. The question is why and what
to do about it. Any thoughts? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling
with A-V and the firewall off, but no luck. Other MSI apps (e.g.,
video and utilities) are loading fine. I am the administrator (and
sole user) of this XP account. Thanks.

You may be one of the administrators when you run xp,but youre not the
administrator,if you run xp in a user account, thier is a major diffrence...
However for youre sound problem, with any new mb,one should first power
off, remove the battery, move the boards CMOS jumper pin from 1-2 to 2-3
position for .30 to .45 seconds or so,then back to 1-2,replace battery,start
computer, you'll need to reset the BIOS date/time etc, plus add ons..Make sure
the BIOS is set to boards sound, download realtech from msi,if all is correct,
open device mgr, expand the sound tree to device,R.click, select, uninstall,do
not
restart comp.power off,then start up,xp will reinstall...

CMOS jumpers would be the ones for the front panel switches, LED,
etc.? "Plus add ons" means...? One thing I had forgotten about was
that in the installation the board was initially shorting (after
momentarily starting) because a couple of the standoffs were in the
wrong place and I had screwed into the case. After those were moved it
started right up.

Problem solved a different way by deleting codecs and pulling PCI modem
and all of a sudden MS saw the hardware after reboot. Thanks.
