Possible winsock problem

I have a Dell desktop that is connected via DSL. It
appears that the NIC went bad so I purchased another one
but I still can't connect to the net after going through
the following the documentation supplied by the ISP. I am
able to connect from my laptop, so I know the DSL modem is
OK. I contacted the ISP and they had me run
ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew. The
ipconfig /renew returned an error message and the tech
said he thinks I have a winsock error. How do I fix it?

I am sorry but I did not write the error message down.
While I was waiting for a reply we contacted the Dell
support line and they had us delete/uninstall several
things and then reinstall XP. That seems to have fixed
the problem.

thanks.
