possible power overheating problem

it reboots successfully other time, it fails to find a boot record and
states that. I have done extensive testing on my hard drive and have ruled
that out. i am now thinking that it may be the power supply or a
overheating. is there any software Hi ,
I have a gigabyte motherboard amd chip and using win xp. Suddenly i
have encountered a problem. after about 15 to 20 minutes the computer just
shuts down. then reboots, sometimes that would allow me to monitor these
things? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the motherboard's webpage to see if they have a application that will allow you to monitor CPU and system temps, voltage, etc. Many new motherboards are providing those apps with the boards or you can download it. In the mean time, see if you are getting the proper airflow through your computer (making sure that cables aren't blocking it, etc.). Make sure all the fans are working, and even add another one if you have the money.

Solution to this problem may be a discussion currently in
the newsgroup alt.comp.hardware as "power supply" and
"computer turns off". Also, in this newsgroup, is a relevant
post entitled "Power Supply glitch".

Specific facts one must obtain before trying to fix such a
problem. Facts made even easier if using an NT based OS such
as XP - as noted in those discussions. Overheating is often
too hyped as a solution because many don't have the necessary
electrical background. They simply blame what they understand
best rather than what more often causes computer problems. A
computer must work just fine in a 100 degree F room. If it
overheats in a 70 degree room, then computer has hardware
failure and not an overheating problem.
