Possible P4P800 SE Problem - Freezing during OS install

Building a new computer for my friend. Having problem with freezing
during the windows xp pro install. It hangs at different percentages
when it's copying setup files. I have completely new hardware from
newegg. Here is how everything has went so far.

1. Swapped hard drive w/ one I know works fine (also ran WD lifeguard
tools quick/extended hdd tests on original drive w/out any errors)
2. Swapped hdd cables
3. Swapped cd rom drive w/ one I know works fine
4. Swapped XP Pro CD /w one I know works fine (both legit CDs)
5. Updated the bios to latest version
6. Ran memtest and memory sticks are fine

The last thing I can think of is swapping the motherboard. Can anyone
think of something glaring I missed?

I had that same problem a couple years ago with random hangs while
installing XP. Although memtest ran fine overnight, it still turned out to
be one of the memory modules. I'd suggest trying the install with just one
memory module installed at a time to see if that works.

Hello !
I had exactly the same problem (freezing)with a new computer last
winter, i was unable to install windows xp.
I tried everything...I thought it was a bad motherboard but in fact it
was the brand new cpu that was defectuous.
Try a new decent power supply, if it's still not working
try to borrow a working cpu from one of your friends if you can and
you'll see...
Hope it helps.

I agree, it could be anything already suggested in this thread, especially a
memory chip problem..

But I had this problem a couple of years ago with a new board and it turned
out to be the CPU temperature. I had bought the MB with an OEM P4 and HSF
already installed, and whoever had put it together didn't do it right. The
CPU was running up to 80 deg. C. As soon as I replaced the HSF the problem
was solved. And it's the easies and cheapest thing to fix if that's what it
is. The hardware monitor in the BIOS should tell you the CPU temp. Just make
sure it has been running for a while.
