I am having difficulties getting images just where i want them. When i open the positioning toolbar and click on my images it stays grey. I need it mostly for the z-index thing i need to make certain objects on top of the other in my tables. thanks for help

I hate to be a wet blanket but absolute positioning elements (especially
mixed with tables) is really a potential wheel spinning exercise.
you'll notice as you drag your window size that these things shift. when
you try it against other browsers you'll pull your hair out.

as for furthering your experiments check tools/ page options/ compatibility
and make sure it's set to custom with all the options you need.
