Portuguese spellchecker for MS Word

P

PaulFXH

Hi

I use MicroSoft Office XP Version 2002 which is configured in the
English language but also has SpellChecking facilities in Spanish and
French.
However, I need a Portuguese (Brazil) spellchecker, particularly in MS
Word.
I understand that to get this requires purchasing the Proofing Tools CD
from MS at a cost of US$80 (which cost is probably considerably higher
in Europe where I am right now).
Does anybody know if and how I can get around this problem, preferably
for free?

TIA
Paul

Disable the spell checker several times, that should do the trick ;-).

Try Openoffice. It allows you to use spellchecker and dictionaries
(free) how many you want...

Hi Aluis
Thanks for your suggestion.

Coincidentally, I just downloaded OOo for the first time 2 days ago and
have just started getting used to it.
Actually, I still can`t figure out how to have a Portuguese dictionary
available IN ADDITION TO an English dictionary.

Can you please point me in the right direction?

Many thanks
Paul

Paul;

The following was written up for OpenOffice 1.x but should work under
2.0.x: http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=users&msgNo=3480.

Please let us know if this solves your problem,

I could lend you my Portuguese mother in law for a few years...... ;)

Thanks for your reply and I have used the link you sent to install a
Portuguese spellchecker on OOo.
Now, while this is great and a significant part of what I was after, I
cannot say that it totally solved my problem. Of course, I didn`t
actually say what my problem totally was, did I?

So, here it is:
Some weeks ago, I came across a very nice spellchecker for text editors
in this group which can be accessed through this link:

http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/scripts8.html

This spellchecker uses the MSWord spellchecker in whatever language
your version of MSWord is configured. I was initially using it with the
Portuguese language (I was in Brazil) but now am using it with my
English-configured MSWord.
However, I would like to have the choice of using my text editor with
spellchecker in EITHER English or Portuguese.
So, this was the principal reason that I wanted a Portuguese dictionary
for MSWord.

I know I can borrow the Portuguese version of the MSWord CDs the next
time I`m in Brazil and use these to (perfectly legally) add the
Portuguese dictionary to my MS Office.
In the meantime, I can just use OOo Writer to write text in Portuguese.
......unless, of course, somebody knows how to reconfigure the vbs
script in the link to access the OOo Portuguese spellchecker rather
than the spellchecker of MS Office.

Thanks for your help, Craig and Aluis

OK;

I can't vouch for the following (so poke it with a stick a few times
first) but you may want to check out:

Spell Magic 5.3.1

Thanks, Craig, for this suggestion.

Actually, in poking with a stick as you suggested, I was a little put
off by the inclusion in its list of languages of "Brazilian" (huh?) and
"Aussie English".

However, on the home page I found a reference to another multi-lingual
spellchecker claimed to "Enhance the spell-checking capabilities of
Microsoft Office by adding multiple languages" which sounded exactly
what I was looking for.
I downloaded a trial version and it does indeed provide "seamless"
Portuguese language spellchecking in MSWord.

Unfortunately, it does not allow the little vbscript for which I
provided a link to incorporate the Portuguese language in its
spellchecking capabilities for text editors OTHER THAN MSWord.

Nevertheless, I now have OOo Writer as a fully-fledged text editor in
the Portuguese language. In addition, I will use the MS Office CDs I
have in Brazil to load the MSWord spellchecker onto my version of
Office when I go back there in a few months.

Thanks and best wishes to everybody for helping me out.

Thanks for your further input.
Actually I had already installed the Portuguese dictionary to OOo based
on advice I received earlier from Craig.
This works perfectly.
I also downloaded a trial version of AutoSpell which allows very well
integrated spellchecking in the Portuguese language on MSWord. Although
this is not free, it is very much cheaper than would cost the Proofing
Tools CD for MS Office that MS recommends in this situation.

Obrigado para a sua ajuda e um abraço,
Paul
