Portrait and Landscape Headers and Footers

I have a document that has many section breaks so that I can include both
portrait and landscape portions in the same document. I have a standard
Header that includes basic document information (Title, Subject, Last
Modified, and Version) that's formatted (with tabs) to stretch across the top
of the page:

[Left Margin] TITLE [Right-Tab] VERSION [Right Margin]
[Left Margin] SUBJECT [Right-Tab] MODIFIED DATE [Right Margin]

I pull Title, Subject, and Modified in from Word Fields (and presumably they
auto-update--but that's another issue), but Version is straight text b/c I
only want to update it when I publish the document, not each time I modify it.

My question is: Is there anyway to set up my Header so the right-justified
text is always relative to the margin (whether I'm in the portrait or
landscape section)?

Right now, I've got two styles defined: Header and Header Landscape which
means that every time I add a new section, I have to go in, turn off "Same as
Previous" and update the style to the correct version. In addition, b/c
"Same as Previous" is turned off, when I update my Version number, I have to
manually update it in every section.

I hope this makes sense and that someone can help me.

You can create a two-column borderless table and left-align the left column
and right-align the right column. If you set the table width to 100%, it
should adjust. Note, however, that this causes Word to have to do a lot of
paddling under the water, which may be reflected in the header shivering
like a jelly.

but unless I turn off "Same as Previous", the table stretches to landscape
size, even in my portrait sections. This defeats my goal of only having to
insert the version number once--I still end up going into every section and

Maybe this is a field problem. If I create a custom field, can I get it to
automatically update in the header when I update its value?

I'm confused. The table should be conforming to 100% of the margin width in
every header, whether portrait or landscape. And yes, if you want to use a
field for the version number, you'll need to define a custom document
property and use a DocProperty field to insert it.

I'm confused too. The functionality certainly looks like it should
behave the way you described, but it doesn't seem to be working on my
machine. Maybe I'm missing a patch?

At any rate, thanks for the help. I've decided to get around the problem
altogether by right-justifying everything (instead of my fancy mix of left
and right) which carries through the various sections just fine. Sometimes
the old-fashioned approach is probably the best!

Well, I just tried it here, and the header, inserted on a portrait page and
set to 100%, does extend to the landscape with in a landscape section, but
then when I go back to the portrait section, it's expanded there, too, so
evidently it *doesn't* work as expected.
