portable hard drives not showing up at all

so i did a clean fresh install of Vista and then tried installing my Zune and
the Zune software onto it. something happened during installation and in the
event viewer, it gave me an error about "portable media" not being installed.

so i wasn't to worried since its my work computer and my main Zune sync
computer is at home.

but now i tried plugging in a new external hard drive [usb powered] and
vista doesn't want to see it [nothing happens when i plug it in].

i've plugged it in the main usb right on the motherboard and i've tried
other usb ports... nothing. i've tried it on other vista pcs... they are
fine, but not mine.

any ideas?

same problem. external HD reported functioning properly, but can find it with
control panel or device manager even though Maxtor HD is reported
compatible....
