Howdy,
Newbie question for you all. On Microsoft's IIS 5.0, I need to open access to port 3456: VAT Default? What exactly is VAT, and what is my server doing on that port? I hate opening stuff when I don't know what it is going to do. Thanks all.

What makes you think you need "VAT"? Where did you learn about
port 3456?

IIS doesn't need that port "to work" -- I don't have it open on mine.

Search google for [ iis port 3456 site:microsoft.com ]
indicates that Microsoft has nothing to say about IIS and port 3456.

Checking the google "Special Collection" for Microsfot [iis "port * 3456"
microsoft: ]
give nothing useful either.

IIS might be using this an ephemeral (automatic) port for some purpose (like
management.)
Someone else may have another take but basic operation of IIS without 3456
is quite possible.

VAT on 3456 (default port) is a Video/Audio (tool == vat) conferencing
protocol so if your
IIS really needs that look into whether you have media services enabled.
