Port 135 blocking by ISP

Don Cunningham

My ISP, Cox Communications, has instituted what they say
is permanent blocking of port 135 that Outlook uses to
connect to Exchange servers. I used the full Outlook
client to connect with my corporate Exchange server and
that no longer works with port 135 blocked. The Corporate
IS also had me connected via a VPN, but the Outlook
function there has stopped working also. Is there a fix in
the works for this problem or am I doomed to web access e-
mail unless I change ISPs?

Create two Outlook profiles, both using the same PST if you wish.
Setup the exchange in one profile, the internet email in the other profile.

Other ISP's may follow suit and block port 135 so consider it permanent. VPN
should (and does) work, contact your corporate IS dept to get them to sort
it out if there is an issue.

Exchange 2003 & Outlook 2003 support RPC over http or https, which means the
RPC traffic (which is how Outlook talks to an Exchange server) is tunnelled
over http or https on port 80 or 443 respectively.
