popup msg: server busy (switch to or retry)

I have a computer that I haven't used for about a year. I am currently
updating it with all of the windows updates, etc. I keep getting a message
that states server busy then it goes on to say "This action cannot be
completed because the other program is busy. Choose switch to to activate
the busy program and correct the problem. I click on the switch to button
and it pops up my start menu. I click off my start menu and start doing
something else and it happens all over again. popup message: server busy
(etc.). The computer is a compaq presario running windows xp. Anyway to
fix this? It's not a major problem--just really annoying.
